Finding the right Italian partner, vetting them properly, and winning them
Finding the right Italian partner, vetting them properly, and winning them — with someone who has done it dozens of times.
In Italy, the partner often is the market. Distribution, credibility, and access run through relationships you don't have and can't buy — and Italian business runs on relational trust rather than institutional trust, which means the paperwork tells you far less than who vouches for whom.
Two mistakes cost American companies the most. The first is choosing a partner nobody could actually read. The public records — company registry, filed accounts, credit history, whether they already carry a competitor — are in Italian and routinely tell a different story from the website, and we check all of it. But the harder question is the one no document answers: are these people serious, are they capable, and will they still be answering your emails in month six? That judgment comes from years inside the Italian business world, from a network that can be asked quietly about someone, and from having sat across from enough counterparts to know the difference between enthusiasm and intent.
The second mistake is signing the wrong kind of relationship. In Italy the difference between an agent and a distributor is a few clauses in a contract and, on termination, a mandatory indemnity you cannot contract away.
Most American companies handle all of this with a business-development hire who speaks no Italian and doesn't know how the Italian business world actually works, or with a local broker paid to close whoever is nearest. The broker problem is structural: an Italian intermediary's network is their livelihood, so their long-term interest sits with the Italian side of the table. Ours doesn't. We're an American firm, we work for you, and we want American companies to do well here — which sometimes means telling you a partner isn't worth having.
That's us: a US firm run by a dual US–Italian citizen, native in both languages and both business cultures, working alongside an Italian attorney. I was at the forefront of building and running the Italian market for Hallow, the world's most downloaded prayer and meditation app — 30-plus Italian partnerships, from national religious figures to actors, television personalities, world-famous athletes and musicians, and independent creators. Nearly all of them were won by cold outreach in a market where cold outreach is supposed to fail, and each was negotiated on terms that held. What came out of that is what matters here: a thick network of people who know people, built one relationship at a time — and a trained eye for whether a counterpart's seriousness and values will survive contact with a signed contract.
Where are you with your Italian partner? That's the question that decides which of the following you need.
1 · Understand it — Italian Partnerships
Five 50-minute sessions + a scoping call. Partnership culture and the partner types that carry legal consequences · identifying and vetting, including the public records most Americans never check · where partners actually are and how to reach them · negotiation dynamics and the terms that trap you · contracts, ongoing management, and the economics of exit. Premium adds a session on your specific partnership target and a written criteria-and-approach document.
From $800 · Premium from $1,800
Choose this if you want to understand how Italian partnerships really work before you commit to one — and to stop being the person in the room who can't tell a good deal from a costly one.
2 · You don't have the partner yet
Two ways to solve that, and the difference is where we stop.
Partner Search & Vetting — we build the profile of your right partner, source candidates against it, check each one on the public record — company registry, filed accounts, credit, litigation, and whether they already carry a competitor — and send a warm-cold approach under our name. You get a shortlist with a one-page read on each and the introductions made. Flat fee, and we exit at the introduction. From ~$4,000
Partnership Origination — we don't stop at the introduction. We define the partner profile, source and vet a real slate, run the outreach under our name, broker the early conversations bilingually, and carry the most promising relationship toward signature — managing a relationship-paced Italian negotiation and flagging the terms that trip Americans up. Where it stops: a signed partnership, or an agreed endpoint.
Single named target — one Italian company you already want to reach: research, multi-touch outreach under our name, a warm first meeting with us in the room, and a candid read on whether it's worth pursuing. $1,500 to run it, plus $1,000–1,500 if the meeting lands — typically $2,500–3,000 in total. You pay the second half only if we get you the meeting.
Full origination brief — 3–6 months. Retainer from $3,000–5,000/month plus a success fee on each closed partner, either a flat fee scaled to deal size or a percentage of first-year channel revenue, agreed up front. Optional attorney review of the partnership structure, +$500–1,000.
How we're paid — we work for you and only you, never as a neutral broker taking money from both sides. The retainer covers the work regardless; the success fee is what ties us to your outcome.
Choose Search & Vetting if you want the names and the door opened, and your team takes it from there. Choose Origination if you'd rather hand the whole thing over and have someone carry it to signature.
3 · You have the partner — or a candidate
Partner Fit Check — an independent read on a company you're dealing with, whether you're about to sign or already have: registry, filed accounts, credit signals, ownership, litigation and reputation, competitor conflicts, and the regional and family-firm read no database gives you. One page per company: the facts, the flags, and a clear go / caution / no. If you're already in the relationship, the same check tells you whether the partner is still sound and whether they're the reason it isn't working. Public record only, and we don't contact them. From $850 per company · three-company pack $2,400 (registry and report costs passed through at cost)
Live Negotiation Support — we sit on your side of the table through the whole arc: strategy before each round, live bilingual advocacy during it, recalibration after. Flat fee, never a percentage of the deal. $1,000–1,200 per round · three-round pack $3,000 · in-person full day $2,000–2,500
Deal-Recovery Intervention — when a partnership has gone quiet, we audit the correspondence, diagnose what actually happened on the Italian side, and reopen the channel as a new voice. Often the cause isn't what you think. If it's dead, you get an honest post-mortem of what killed it — which is usually worth the fee on its own. Where the Fit Check stops at the desk, this is where we pick up the phone. From $1,750
Partnership Closure Engagement — you have the target and you want it carried to signature. Milestone-billed over the deal. $10,000–25,000
Choose this if the partner exists and the risk is now about reading them correctly, getting the agreement right, or deciding whether to keep them.
4 · You want this running continuously
Fractional Italian BD — we function as your part-time Italian business development team: a live pipeline, ongoing outreach, and partner relationships tended in Italian between deals. Retainer from $3,000–5,000/month (six-month minimum, then rolling) plus commission on closed deals.
Choose this if Italy isn't one partnership but a channel you intend to keep building.
The Legal Layer — add a session with our Italian attorney, focused here on the agreement itself: agency versus distribution and what each commits you to, EU-compliant exclusivity and territory, targets and minimums, and termination. With a one-page written summary. He's a Milan-based lawyer specializing in international business and contract law, and he works in English. From $500
Where this leads — Entering Italy if you're still deciding whether and how · Setting Up in Italy if the partnership points toward an entity or people on the ground · Launching Your Product in Italy for what happens after the channel exists.
What this isn't — we don't draft your contract or give legal, tax, or accounting advice; that comes from our attorney and the licensed Italian professionals we bring in, and we'll tell you plainly when you've reached that line. We don't guarantee a reply, a meeting, or a signature — we guarantee the work that makes them likely, and an honest read when a partner isn't worth pursuing.
